9A – Testing the Hypothesis

There are certain people that are at the University of Florida who share a lot in common with others regarding their opportunities but fall slightly outside the boundaries. After interviewing 5 people, I tried to target different people, who have a car and live close to University in a house or an apartment complex that has free parking for their residents. These people fall under a different circumstance because if you have a house  there is most likely that it comes with a place to park and if parking is free people wont be as worked up about having to pay to keep their car in a garage.
The first interview I spoke to was a junior at the University of Florida and she lives in a house right next to campus. She falls outside the boundary because she doesn't have a problem with parking anymore. She parks her car in the driveway and does not use her car to get to class. She explained that this year she doesn't have a problem with parking considering she has a designated spot but the years before she had a difficult time with parking.
The second interview I spoke to a Senior at the University of Florida who lives in a house as well. This resident also has a car but does not feel that parking is a hassle for him because he bought a special placard that allows him to park all over campus and not many other people have it. He says that since he has his own driveway he doesn't have the problem of paying for a parking garage or spending time looking for a spot. He notified me that without his placard he would have a lot of difficulty finding parking.
The third Interview I spoke to a Sophomore at the University of Florida who lives in a apartment complex that allows her to park her car for free. Each apartment comes with a designated free parking spot for the resident that has a car. She said that since she has somewhere to park her car during the year parking is not a hassle for her. She said that last year trying to find parking to store your car for the year was extremely difficult because it was so expensive. Now that she has her own designated parking spot she doesn't have to deal with the hassle in looking for one.
The fourth interviewer is a Junior at the University Of Florida. After  I spoke to her I found out that she drives her car down from south florida but after a week of having it here her parents pick it up because she has no use for it. She said that she really doesn't have a need for a car she has a scooter and that gets her most places she needs. She said that having a car here is too difficult and she doesn't want to deal with it so she brings her car home so she doesn't have to find local parking to store her car. She says that everything on this campus is so close and walking or scooting distance and if she really wanted to go somewhere further she would take a car transportation service such as uber.
The fifth interviewer I spoke to a Senior at the University of Florida who lives in a house relatively close to campus. He has a car here and parks his car in his front yard. He doesn't have the problem of finding parking because he lives in a house and he has a driveway. He says that being able to have your car here is a big advantage because you can do whatever you want when you want. He said that he doesn't drive his car to campus and class but uses his car for other things like going to Guinee Springs. He clarified that if he didn't live in a house with free parking he probably wouldn't bring his car down because he can't afford it.

Inside the boundary
Outside the boundary
People with cars that have no where to park them.
People with cars that live in houses with a driveway or apartments with free parking.
The need is more parking garages for a cheaper price
These people don't have to find parking because they have designated spots where they can leave there car.
This need exists because there are so many people with cars and not a lot of parking spots/ parking garages.
It is a lot easier to have a car at the University of Florida if you have somewhere you can park it for a reasonable amount. These people own cars and don't have to pay extra for parking which benefits them.

  1. There are so many students at the University and some live close but some live far. Me and my roommates live out near Archer and parking on or near campus is a pain for us. I would say around half of people at UF fall with in your boundary. That is quite a bit of people who have a problem that could be easily fixed. I think you are onto something here.

    1. Hi,
I can see a website or maybe an app like uber to help student commute to campus as a beneficial and cost saving idea. The parking situation maybe alleviated as more students are driving in one vehicle. Perhaps there should be a committee to help renegotiate the parking fee. Although I can see this problem nationwide in all campuses, maybe there should be a parking garage that changes its rates depending on how busy the parking garage is.

  2. Natalie,
I find this interesting. Many people change living locations or return a car in order to avoid the hassle of parking the the Gainesville area. This could create another concern. If people start moving and crowding locations with parking, apartments could charge a premium. This could cause people to fall back into the situation they previously had. I currently pay, I believe, $10 a month to park in my buildings parking garage. You solution of building a new parking garage for students near campus would solve many solution, while preventing new problems form occurring.

  3. Hi Natalie, I like all of your interviews. They seem to fit each different way that your idea could have gone. I also think that these interviews show that for many people parking is not much of a problem. However, there are definitely still people that would benefit from free parking, both on and off campus. Overall, I think that you did very good on 9A.
