27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

Coco Chanel, Lisa Chaney

1) What surprised me the most was that Chanel survived a childhood of deprivation and neglect and she enabled herself to become one of the most powerful woman in the country. I admire Chanel for her commitment, character, intelligence and immigration, if she didn't have those characteristics she wouldn't make it to where she is now.  I least admire that Chanel was resistant to marriage and wouldn't let anyone in. She also had a love affair with one of Europe's most eligible men, a playboy. The entrepreneur encountered failure she was using drugs and was not keeping up with her work. She had her first failure in 1954 when she returned from war and became a world class couturier.
2)It seem as if the entrepreneurs rough childhood played a role in how she acted later in life, she was a bisexaul, aused drugs and has love affairs.  She  had this inviolability wall of self protection raised up over the  years that few were able to reach her. Her loneliness was becoming tragic.
3) A part of the reading that was confusing to me was “ My confirmation of Gabrielle's rumored bisexuality and drug use is important. Other discoveries were perhaps even more so, because they opened up deeper, sometimes disturbing questions about her.
4) Why were you so closed off and didn't let anyone in? What kind of drugs did you use and did they enhance your ability to creative? I would ask these questions because I feel as if it plays a big roll in her success.

5) I don't think she really worked hard, I think she was always just messing around and got lucky because he creative and original.

    Natalie,
    I find your reflection very informative. I was completely unaware of the history behind Chanel. I also think that her rough childhood could have played a role in her drug abuse and lack of commitment. At the end of the day, she still became a popular fashion and businesswoman. This I find inspirational, although the drugs negate the quality of the inspiration. As a whole, I think your reflection is truly a glimpse into women that became successful despite the darkness that surrounded her.

    Hey Natalie,

    Reading your reflection was very interesting because we always told about these famous figures but we never get to see what those celebs are really like. Chanel seems like she has a very complex mind and I think that just added to her creativity. It is horrible to say but what if Coco didn't abuse drugs. Maybe her work wouldn't have been the same. Although she did some bad things in life she still was able to provide the world with original fashion.

“Elon Musk” by Ashlee Vance What surprised me the most was the fact that he was that intelligent to create such a helpful product, he knew what the future needed in order to maintain a sufficient lifestyle.  His vivid imagination and extreme commitment allowed his dreams to come to life. I admire the fact that Musk was extremely committed to his ideas and made his dreams come to life. From an early age, even as a student Musk knew that he wanted to solve humanity's dependence on oil and create a safer environment for the future.
